I was fortunate enough be able to attend this year’s BFX festival held at the BIC in Bournemouth. This year they had talks from Double Negative, Blue Zoo, Epic Games, Walt Disney Animation Studio and many more.

I attended on the Thursday, eager to listen to Ben Lumsden from Epic Games, creator of Unreal Engine, who are bringing interactive experiences to VR, CGI imagery and TV. During the talk Ben discussed the recent uses of Unreal Engine in games, TV, new media and architectural visualisation and in turn, how it is changing how we, as visualisers, are using it to bring to life our creations.

An example of this is animation studio Blue Zoo, who are using Unreal Engine to create their next animated short. They spoke about how this new software has aided their animation process and gave the BFX audience a teaser of their new real time rendered animation.

Also at the festival was Lighting Supervisor Malcolm Neailey from Double Negative (DNEG), who spoke in depth about the lighting set-ups used in the Edinburgh scene of The Avengers - Infinity War. This scene included 3 CGI characters interacting with real actors and he spoke about how he used real lighting along with CG lighting to highlight and emphasize each character’s personality.

Isle of Dogs visual effects supervisor, Tim Ledbury spoke about the process when creating the stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs. From design to post production he covered the challenges his team faced and how they overcame them with logistical and technical planning throughout.

It was a very insightful and interesting day and I would like to congratulate Bournemouth University on another wonderful BFX Festival.

Moving to Mars

We recently took part in a competition to design and create 3d / cgi visuals for a new colony on Mars for one million humans to live in.

Firstly, we had to consider Mars’ atmospheric conditions, air quality and suitable housing structures.  Typically, a dome is the most popular choice for many Mars structures, but is not the most practical or creative, so after careful thought and consideration we decided create a torus shaped structure to house the cities.

Energy source was our next consideration, renewable energy would always be the better way to go. Thinking about the harsh dust storms and the distance away from the sun, solar and wind energy would only be suitable in certain conditions and would require regular cleaning after storms. We finally settled on a mixture of wind, solar and Kilo Power stations to power the cities.

Water was the next big issue when it came to life on Mars, as there are no rivers or seas like on Earth. However, frozen water sits under Mars surface. Two water extraction buildings are built into the mountains which are tasked with mining, filtering and breaking down the water for human consumption and creating Hydrogen and Oxygen for breathable air within the torus.

A space port and a train give Mars transport links to access other cities, Earth and other planets and most importantly bring in more resources and people.

Finally, we have a society suitable for one million people to live on Mars.

Fancy a trip?

We thought we would start by talking you through some of our work and some of our favourite projects.  Five Elms was one of these.

We were tasked with creating marketing CGI's for this re-development in Bromley, Greater London.

With its great commuter links to Central London and also being in a leafy suburb the development was being aimed at business professionals wishing for an easy commute without the hustle and bustle of a central location.

External and Internal 3d Artists impressions were developed along side the client, alllowing vital early off plan marketing to begin long before construction was complete.

This also allowed overseas buyers to be targeted through various different channels.
